How Does Homeopathy Work If It’s So Diluted?
If you’ve ever looked into homeopathy, you’ve probably come across the same question: How can something work if there’s almost nothing in it?
This is a fair question, and an internet search doesn’t do much to instil confidence in its amazing properties. Homeopathy is different from conventional medicines, and its method of preparation challenges what many of us believe to be solid science.
Rather than dismissing the question, it is worth exploring. Science has a long history of observing that something works completely, before understanding why, and homeopathy is no exception.
A Brief History
Homeopathy was developed over 200 years ago by the German physician Samuel Hahnemann. Dissatisfied with many of the medical treatments of his day, he began carefully observing how substances affected healthy people and how they might be used to help people experiencing similar symptoms.
Over the years, homeopathy has grown to be used by millions of people worldwide. It continues to be practised in many countries alongside conventional healthcare, particularly in European countries where it began, and India where the government cannot afford to subsidise expensive medications.
How Are Homeopathic Medicines Made?
Homeopathic medicines are prepared through a series of carefully controlled dilutions and vigorous shaking between each step, a process known as succussion. Each medicine is manufactured according to recognised pharmacopoeia standards to ensure consistency and quality. This preparation is one of the main reasons homeopathies attracts debate.
At higher potencies, many homeopathic medicines are diluted beyond the point where modern chemistry would predict any molecules of the original substance remain. From a conventional pharmacology perspective, this raises an obvious question: How could it possibly have an effect?
To date, science does not have a widely accepted answer. That uncertainty is often presented as evidence that homeopathy cannot work. However, the history of medicine reminds us that understanding often follows observation.
Observation Often Comes Before Explanation
One of the best-known examples comes from the medicine known as Viagra.
Researchers originally developed sildenafil to treat angina, but clinical trials revealed an unexpected side effect and the drug proved ineffective for its intended purpose. This observation prompted further research, leading to its widespread use for erectile dysfunction. Rather than reflecting a lack of scientific understanding, this demonstrates how careful observation and ongoing investigation can uncover valuable new clinical applications.
Medical history contains many similar examples. Aspirin was used long before scientists fully understood how it reduced pain and inflammation. Penicillin was discovered because Alexander Fleming noticed something unexpected growing in a laboratory dish. Even today, researchers continue to discover new uses for existing medicines.
Scientific progress often begins with clinicians asking, “Why did that happen?”
Homeopathy and observational science
Homeopathy has been used clinically for over two centuries, yet researchers are still investigating how highly diluted medicines might exert biological effects. This is an active area of research rather than a settled question.
Scientists have explored several possible explanations, including changes to the structure of water during the preparation process, the formation of nanoparticles during manufacturing, and measurable biological responses in laboratory models. Progress has been made, and the fact that homeopathy does contain minute substances has been verified. However, on shoestring budget, researchers continue to investigate the question using modern scientific methods.
Understanding the mechanism is important, but history reminds us that discovering how something works sometimes takes much longer than recognising that something works.
What Does the Research Say?
Like many areas of healthcare, homeopathy research is complex.
Whilst researchers have also published randomised controlled trials, observational studies and systematic reviews investigating homeopathic treatment across a range of conditions.
One challenge is that homeopathy is usually individualised. Two people with the same medical diagnosis may receive different homeopathic medicines because the prescription is based on the whole person rather than the diagnosis alone. This individualised and holistic approach does not align well with conventional research methods. Most clinical studies are designed to administer a single intervention to a large group of participants with the same health condition and then evaluate its effectiveness by analysing the proportion of individuals who experience improvement.
Some homeopathic research shows little difference to placebo due to the lack of individualised treatment.
The Homeopathy Research Institute has compiled and summarised hundreds of published studies examining laboratory research, clinical trials and systematic reviews. This illustrates that whilst individualised treatment is best practice, some health conditions can often be treated with the same remedy.
As with all areas of medicine, research continues to evolve.
What Does This Mean for Patients?
When individuals visit my clinic, they are usually looking for one thing: to feel better. Most have already seen their doctor and either have a diagnosis, or a functional disease, which is when all the testing comes back clear, but they are still unwell and need support.
Like anything, some people will notice an obvious improvement with homeopathy, and some will notice less. Whilst homeopathy is definitely a whole system of medicine on its own, I usually see better results when it’s combined with herbal medicine, nutrition, or lifestyle changes.
Keep questioning
Science has always advanced through curiosity.
Questioning, testing ideas and refining our understanding are all part of the scientific process. Many accepted medical treatments began with careful clinical observations before researchers understood exactly how they worked or recognised their best application.
Homeopathy continues to raise important scientific questions, and researchers continue to investigate them.
Whether future discoveries fully explain its mechanisms remain to be seen. In the meantime, thoughtful discussion, ongoing research and high-quality clinical studies are far more valuable than dismissing a therapy simply because we don’t yet have all the answers.
